Picture this: You return home after a long day of work to discover that a small, but growing fire has broken out in your backyard. The responding fire company starts to put the fire out but halfway through extinguishing the blaze. They abruptly stop and pack up their supplies – they are only allowed to use a certain amount of water to fight the fire. I bet this sounds ridiculous to many of you and in truth, it is.

The current buzz about the possibility of new shipbuilding locations in Solano County brings to mind some interesting local history: In the late 1800s and early 1900s several shipyards flourished in Vallejo, just across the Napa River from Mare Island, the Navy’s first West Coast base where more than 500 vessels were built and launched.

I must admit I have been deaf, dumb, and blind for a long time. I thought I had arrived at a state of enlightenment when I learned there was another class of people besides the white suburban middle class I grew up in. I learned in college and graduate school and as a young working man that there was a distinct class of poverty-stricken people of color living in the big cities. That was quite a revelation to me.

On March 24, the Trump administration’s top officials were exposed for leaking U.S. war plans in a Signal group chat — one so reckless it included a journalist by mistake. That same day, the U.S. Senate confirmed one of Trump’s top State Department nominees. These cabinet positions were filled with deeply unqualified nominees and here we are, not two months into this corrupt administration. Let’s be clear: This wasn’t business as usual. This was complicity in a national security crisis.
