Kalispell City Council took its first look at the municipality’s proposed fiscal year 2026 budget this week. Council mulled over the $182.2 million financial roadmap during work sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday night, debating councilor pay, affordable housing, city trails and at one point, office chairs. The total budget proposed by City Manager Doug Russell is about $1.5 million more than the fiscal 2025 budget approved by Council last year.

Before falling, coincidentally, into what would be his lifelong career fighting fires, Hagen thought forestry would be his calling. “When I was a much younger guy, I was really into wilderness camping,” he said. He enrolled in the University of Montana in 1982 but soon discovered that forestry was not as much outside exploring as it was hard science.

May 7—Public youth programs, pool fees and park reservations in Kalispell will undergo price hikes in the near future. Kalispell City Council on Monday approved a request from the Parks and Recreation Department to make across-the-board fee increases intended to keep pace with mounting operational costs. The hikes, ranging from roughly 8% to 20%, also take into account Kalispell Public Schools' plan to charge for use of its facilities.
