Prosecutors last week charged the surviving motorist of a deadly and allegedly alcohol-fueled New Year's Day wreck near Bigfork with vehicular homicide while under the influence. Kala R. Knaus, 31, is expected to appear before Judge Dan Wilson in Flathead County District Court on July 10 for her arraignment on the felony charge. Booked into the county jail on June 19, Knaus remains behind bars with bail set at $250,000.

Judge Amy Eddy flatly rejected Derrick James Jackson’s story of self-defense in the deaths of his mother and her partner while sentencing the convicted killer to 100 years behind bars on Tuesday. A Flathead County jury in April found Jackson, 39, guilty of deliberate homicide for the Oct. 28, 2022 murder of 65-year-old Stanley Grotberg, but acquitted him of killing his mother, 62-year-old Tricia DeMotts.

A man enraged after receiving a compliment on his mowing job on family property near Kalispell earlier this month allegedly rammed his brother with a side-by-side. Timothy James Sonstelie, 62, of Washington faces a felony count of assault with a weapon in Flathead County District Court for the alleged June 6 attack. Initially held in the county jail with bail set at $75,000, he was released on June 11. Sonstelie's arraignment before Judge Danni Coffman is set for June 30.

Prosecutors are seeking to revoke the suspended sentence of a Columbia Falls man who authorities accused in February of endangering deputies while fleeing arrest. Aaron Martin McGarry, 38, had an outstanding warrant for his arrest when a pair of Flathead County Sheriff's Office deputies confronted him on Antelope Trail near Whitefish about 10:33 a.m., Feb. 10, according to court documents.

A man arrested during a 2024 standoff in Kalispell sparked over the volume of music later received a pair of suspended sentences in Flathead County District Court. Prosecutors initially charged Nathaniel Everett Wood, 32, with felony assault with a weapon and a misdemeanor count of obstructing a peace officer following the March 17, 2024 confrontation on Five Avenue North West. Wood pleaded not guilty that same month but struck a deal with the Flathead County Attorney's Office in August.
