When the Brooklyn Park Fire Department’s $39 million new central station was approved last August, Fire Chief Shawn Conway said he hoped construction would begin in summer 2025. With increased construction costs and potential land use updates, the fire department has a few more hoops to jump through before the project can break ground.

Brooklyn Park leaders and community members met for a groundbreaking ceremony April 7 at the Zanewood Recreation Center. Over the next several months, construction crews will renovate the existing space to support early childhood programming while also building a dedicated teen space from the ground up. Set to open this December, the Zanewood Teen Center will offer sport courts, arts programming, workforce development and other recreation opportunities for area youth.

The Brooklyn Park Police Department has expressed concern regarding a "growing number" of Level 3 sex offenders – those who are deemed the most likely to reoffend – living within city limits. Now, the Brooklyn Park City Council is considering an ordinance that would limit where those offenders can live. While a majority of the city council voiced support for restricting sex offender residency at an April 7 work session, one council member argued such a law would be a violation of people's rights.

Eighth-grade students at Brooklyn Middle STEAM School (BMS) spent the past few months scribbling, sketching and brainstorming ideas for a mural that now hangs in their cafeteria. Approximately 20 teens worked with resident artist and Minneapolis-based teacher Melodee Strong to bring a work of art to life — with the goal of depicting what “belonging” looks like at BMS.
