If at first you don’t succeed, failure may be your only option. This is proving very much to be the case with the resumption of savagely lethal strikes on Gaza by the Israeli Air Force on March 19. In a matter of hours, over 400 Palestinians were slaughtered. The resumption of the attacks by Israel terminated a fragile, often qualified cease-fire that had seen the first phase hold, for the most part, through March.

This brings the death toll to at least 27, with another 31 people officially missing. As of this writing, the larger Palisades Fire remains only 22 percent contained, while the Eaton Fire is at 55 percent.

The peace movement does not have a visibly big presence, at least relative to its need, in a deeply troubled world. However the number of people who want to live in a peaceful world is clearly in a big majority and hence, as threats to peace continue to increase, potentially the peace movement can be much more influential and effective. A lot depends on how carefully the priorities of the peace movement are decided and taken among the people.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over war crimes in Gaza. The court stated there are “reasonable grounds” to believe they committed war crimes, including directing attacks against civilians.

President Joe Biden hardly appears inclined to consider any diplomatic solution to what may be viewed as perhaps the conflicts being in essence only being escalated further by role played by Washington. These include the Gaza-crisis and the Ukraine-war. Ironically, little or virtually no importance is being given by US to the limited appeal of this stand of its in significant parts of the world. Yes, the superpower has primarily the support of its western allies.
