How does one take seriously having a vaccine denier in charge of public health? How about having the world’s richest corporate owner in charge of cutting regulatory agencies? Or having the other foxes in the henhouse, much less Oval office-ing the degenerate ringmaster himself? I would guess all who read this article feel outrage and horror, but also more than a little scared. Do you go to bed at night or get up in the morning with thoughts, fears, and dread that you want to jettison?

Trump was quoting and endorsing a posting on his Truth Social platform by Tom Fitton, head of the ultra-right group Judicial Watch.

Consumer pocketbooks are taking the heat. Climate change is no longer a theoretical issue that will happen at some distant point in the future, like 2050 or 2100. Already, unprecedented climate change is happening on a regular basis and clobbering the American capitalistic system via consumer pocketbooks. People can’t afford ordinary life. They’re priced out of the market. Everything is getting more expensive by the year, every year.

As we turn the corner into autumn, all of God’s creatures begin looking for shelter. Some of them, being critters with limited brainpower, may get confused as to what constitutes appropriate quarters for the winter. We had such an encounter recently. One minute our big, lunky lab was happily tearing around the family room doing a few exuberant laps, just for fun. The mood shifted when she kicked over her dog bed trying to turn a corner.

In his trivia column in last week’s Leader, staff writer Kevin Carbery quizzed readers on some of his favorite movie quotes. One movie quote that Kevin didn’t use offers a perfect summary of the recently killed-off Arnold Parkway fiasco. It was a line from the 1967 prison movie “Cool Hand Luke,” starring Paul Newman as a rebellious prisoner doing hard time for cutting the heads off parking meters.
