Lion Electric Co. says it is laying off hundreds more workers as part of a plan to staunch its financial losses. The electric bus company says some 300 employees will be let go in the coming days in a 30 per cent cut to its workforce.It expects most of the layoffs to be temporary. Lion Electric previously laid off about 220 employees in a pair of announcements in February and April.

With just over one month before the beginning of the school year, universities in Atlantic Canada are worried about the expected big drop in foreign student enrolment due to caps imposed by the federal government. In Nova Scotia, the province has so far accepted less than 4,000 international students for the upcoming year, down from last year's 19,900 foreign students. However, the number of international students who actually choose to study in the province may be even lower than that.

Days after gunfire broke out at the Africville reunion in Halifax, Quentrel Provo is calling on police and politicians to do more about gun violence in the city. "We're over words now. We need doers. We need action," the Stop the Violence founder said Tuesday. Five bystanders were hospitalized, including one with life-threatening injuries, after two men exchanged gunfire at Saturday night's event. No arrests have been made and police have not provided any suspect information as of Wednesday.

Ontario Provincial Police say they've connected two double homicides in a small town in northeastern Ontario to one suspect who has since died. Police say on July 30, 2023, emergency officials responded to a medical call at a home in Kirkland Lake, a town with a population of roughly 7,700. They say 49-year-old Gabriel Marecki and 37-year-old Amanda Lachapelle were taken to hospital where they were both pronounced dead.

New data from Public Health Ontario shows the number of confirmed cases of pertussis, known commonly as whooping cough, began rising across the province in May - and several area health units say the situation has only gotten worse since then. At least six health units have issued public notices since June and two others have confirmed to Global News that they have observed a higher-than-normal number of cases.
