In a post shared to social media site TikTok on Thursday 20 February, Kidd, who runs the Half Moon at Kirdford in Billingshurst, West Sussex, said there were “tough, tough times ahead”. The business, which also announced it is set to be acquired by Fortress Investment Group for about £350.5m, has opened 17 new sites (16 Lounges and one Cosy Club) within the first half of its financial year (H1 FY25) ended 6 October 2024, and is on track to open 35 more sites this year. Loungers, which operates all-day café-bar-restaurants sites under the Lounge, Cosy Club and Brightside brands, said it hopes to be running 292 sites in total by the end of FY25.

The move comes as Loungers, which operates all-day café-bar-restaurnats sites under the Lounge, Cosy Club and Brightside brands, announced a revenue lift of 19.2% and adjusted earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) up 25.0%, in the 24 weeks ended 6 October 2024. Loungers chairman Alex Reilley said the sale will allow the business to “execute our ambitious growth plans even more decisively and effectively”.

Q: I have been reading with some concern about the closing of so many pubs over the last few years, and wonder if there is anything that Local Authorities can do to redress the balance? A: You would like to think that bearing in mind pubs have been closing more so in some areas and there are a number of vacant units in towns and cities, that the answer would be an unequivocal “yes”. However, the situation is more complicated.

The fact that there are such challenges is both frustrating and unnecessary and the background to the current situation goes all the way back to 2020 and those terrible pandemic times. The then Government with both a view to promote public safety (external activity was encouraged) and to assist the somewhat battered industry introduced legislation which was called the Business and Planning Act 2020.
