About 50 members of civil rights groups and several elected officials gathered outside the locked iron gates of the Naval Academy on Thursday to condemn its decision to remove 381 DEI-related books from the academy's library. Tucked into the corner of King George and Randall Streets, participants' demands to reinstate the banned literature crept over the academy's brick walls, into the yards and homes of high-ranking officers and key personnel on Captain's Row.

Elfreth, the freshman Democrat representing Maryland's District 3, which includes parts of Anne Arundel County, has hosted a series of town halls in recent weeks, the latest at the Michael E. Busch Annapolis Library.

A new program from Anne Arundel County aims to offer grants to people hurt by the criminalization of cannabis. The grants, which can be for up to $100,000, are overseen by the Community Reinvestment and Repair Commission, a government entity set up following the legalization of recreational cannabis in 2023 which recommends how Anne Arundel should spend its portion of the annual 9% sales tax on cannabis.

A Naval Academy graduate has made a seven-figure donation to his alma mater to help launch a new center focusing on American energy security and the impacts of climate change. Jim Matheson, a 1987 graduate, Harvard Business School professor and a partner at a venture capital firm, directed the gift - on behalf of him and his wife, Julie - to be used for the launch of The Center for Energy Security and Infrastructure Resilience.

The Naval Academy announced its next commandant of midshipmen Monday in the wake of the removal of hundreds of books from its library to comply with anti-DEI executive orders. Capt. Gilbert E. Clark, Jr., will become the 91st commandant - what civilian universities call the dean of students - in June. He'll take over for Capt. Walter H. Allman III, who served one year in the role.
