An Irishman is recovering in an Italian hospital after nearly drowning while proposing to his girlfriend. Reports from Italy suggest that the 41-year-old was on one knee at a marina in the north-east of the country when he slipped and fell into the water. The unusual incident took place in Trieste, a coastal city about 90 minutes west of Venice. The Italian Coastguard said the exact location was Venice Wharf, part of the popular Marina San Giusto, at around 11pm on Sunday, December 29.

The Chairman of one of Northern Ireland's leading hospitality groups has recalled how a chance encounter aged 12 led him to owning his first hotel. Eugene McKeever MBE, Chair of the McKeever Hotel Group was speaking as the group marked their 30th anniversary of taking ownership of Corrs Corner and announced an investment of £320,000 in the venue over the next year.
