A new record has been set for Longboat Key real estate, and it’s a jaw-dropper. The 2.67-acre property at 6633 Gulf of Mexico Drive, known as the Ohana estate, has sold for $19.75 million in a private sale that closed on May 30, said Realtor Reid Murphy. The sale marks a new record for a home sale on Longboat Key, shattering the previous record of $16.5 million, which was set in 2020 with the sale of the Serenissima estate located at 845 Longboat Club Road.

There were months of heated debate and countless scrapped proposals followed by weeklong public protests after a design consultant suggested in January 2024 that Sarasota repurpose its 1902 city seal design for its new logo. But the dust has settled and the city of Sarasota, at last, has a new logo, ending efforts to update the logo that since the 1990s featured an image of the replica David statue that stands at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art.

A year removed from his 95-mile trek to Everest Base Camp, he calculates he has eight, maybe 10 more years in strong health. Retirement is a consideration. He’s more reflective now since returning, better able to consider the big questions. He’s also planning for another big mountain trek.

Science fair normally gets all the academic exhibition fanfare, but Sarasota County is working to make room for another student-led project showcase: history fair. The Selby Library Rotunda hosted this year’s Sarasota County History Day Contest entries on Feb. 24. Judges spent the day reviewing exhibits, performances, documentaries, websites and papers from 84 Sarasota County middle school and high school students.
