The corner falls away in a cascading corkscrew; tyres go light, revs flare. Barber Motorsports Park is a rollercoaster. It’s Day Two of a sports car enduro at the undulating IndyCar-grade circuit running through Alabama woodland. I’m driving a Toyota, its mid-mounted engine singing at high revs, locked in a skirmish with a Porsche. I tuck into its slipstream as it slices past a backmarker. Toyota versus Porsche. It’s a classic endurance racing battle.

The first drive of the evo Fast Fleet Porsche 911 Carrera GTS is in grim conditions. There is no horizon: the sky blends into the ground in one continuous wall of murky grey. Frontline Cars, the Abingdon-based MG restoration and restomod specialist, has made its name modernising MGBs into surprisingly potent packages. Now it’s turning its hand to the B’s predecessor, the svelte MGA of the 1950s. The results are certainly impressive. Sharp, Le Mans-derived styling makes the MGA a desirable model today, but there’s no denying it’s short on performance. To rectify this, Frontline’s take reduces weight, increases power and brings a suite of interior niceties to the classic.

This is our first chance to try the all-electric Maserati GranCabrio Folgore on an extended test on UK roads, following a couple of briefer introductory drives on Italian soil, in prototype and production form. That chance coincides with grim British weather; not exactly dream convertible conditions but even roof-up in a soggy Midlands car park, the GranCabrio still looks ineffably glamorous.
