DULUTH — There wasn’t anything special about Longview Tennis Club Wednesday as Duluth East’s Karl Kimber got ready for practice. It was a sunny — if breezy — early May afternoon and Kimber was doing what he’s done in the spring and summer since he was three years old — he was hitting balls. He spent the majority of practice hitting with Greyhounds’ assistant Nathan Chan, a strong player with a complete game. Still, when they came off the court, it was hard to tell who was working out who.

PROCTOR — Early Wednesday evening, Proctor’s Lily Smith — fresh off of track practice — arrived at the Rails Indoor Sports Complex for more practice. She and about 20 other girls in grades 7-12 were getting together with coaches Matt Solberg and Erik Edmunds for a new sport at Proctor — flag football. CLOQUET — It certainly wasn’t the start Cherry’s Noah Sundquist was looking for against Cloquet Thursday at Mettner Field. Sundquist walked the first four Lumberjacks batters he faced and only threw four strikes in his first 16 pitches. In the end, he wouldn’t allow a hit — though his control remained an issue over the four innings he pitched.

HERMANTOWN — It wasn’t the start Grand Rapids’ Caleb Gunderson was looking for when he took the mound against Hermantown Tuesday at Centricity Park at Fichtner Fields. The Thunderhawks had scored twice in the top of the first, but Hermantown had gotten a runner in scoring position and he needed a strike from sophomore Joe Dick to make a play at the plate. “I missed my spot and the kid put a good swing on it,” Gunderson said.

DULUTH — In the top of the eighth inning, Duluth East senior Jay Nick roped a line drive into left field against Duluth Denfeld on April 14 at Wade Stadium. The base-clearing double broke a 4-4 tie and the Greyhounds would go on to win 8-4 — their first of the season — over a Hunters team with section title aspirations. After the game, Nick was focused on the much-needed win for East, but those who know him best also had their minds on his journey back to the field.
