DULUTH — The old Sears Diehard TV commercials always intrigued me as a kid. A snow-encased car would stand sentry on top of a frozen lake in International Falls during January, February and March … and then miraculously start and drive away thanks to that Diehard car battery. That frozen lake and desolate landscape in International Falls seemed as remote as the ice caps on Mars. “Why would anyone want to live there,” I thought as that commercial played.

DULUTH — Early in 2023 when former President Jimmy Carter entered hospice, many newspapers and TV stations around the country put together stories that highlighted his remarkable life. These prewritten obituaries were then ready to publish when Carter passed away to prevent a mad scramble to assemble stories on tight deadlines. The DNT’s prewritten obituary story focused on Carter’s 1978 visit to Duluth.

DULUTH — According to research conducted by Reviews.org, Americans check their cellphones an average of 205 times a day, or 8.54 times an hour. That’s a 42% increase from 2023. Have our cellphones turned us into Pavlov’s dogs? It seems so. Full disclosure: So far this week I’ve picked up my phone 97, 100, 78, 89 and 131 times Sunday through Thursday. So, I’m well below the national average, but I’m not exactly living off the grid either. Admit it.

DULUTH — Our family dog received the best meal of her life earlier this week. A 4-ounce sirloin. Medium rare. Cut into steak bites. Served on a plate on the kitchen floor. Essie, a 10-year-old puggle, doesn’t usually enjoy such fine dining. Kibble mixed with a few carrots and cucumbers typically suits her non-discriminatory palate. But she constantly searches for a human food upgrade and employs a strategy of positioning herself at your feet.
