Esko native Noah Furcht has been an everyday presence in the lineup for Division I Charlotte’s baseball program. At the conclusion of the regular season, Furcht has started all but one game of 52 for the 49ers, posting a .254 batting average with six homers and 27 RBIs as the team’s primary right fielder. Furcht, a senior, recently went 2-for-4 and scored three times in a win at Rice on May 4.

Cloquet-Esko-Carlton blue line standout Karson Young plans to continue his college career close to home, as the defenseman announced a commitment to the Minnesota Duluth men’s hockey program via social media on Wednesday. The decision wasn’t exactly hard for Young, growing up in Cloquet and watching some of the other Lumberjack greats that suited up for the UMD. “The Bulldogs have always been a special team in my eyes,” Young said.

A Grand Rapids Thunderhawk, called in to play in goal on relatively short notice, has led his new USHL team into the league’s championship series. Carter Casey joined up with the USHL Waterloo Blackhawks after the end of the high school season and, after injuries to two goalies in front of him, has stepped up spectacularly as Waterloo reached the Clark Cup finals, scheduled to start on Friday night.

Duluth Denfeld alum Joe Rudd represented the University of Minnesota at the NCAA men’s swimming and diving championships in the Seattle area in late March. Rudd was part of a 400-yard medley relay team that finished 25th in 3 minutes, 6.36 seconds. Earlier in the season, Rudd finished 11th in the 200-yard breaststroke at the Big Ten Championships, which Minnesota hosted. He swam a 1:54.24 in that event on March 1, capping off a competition in which Minnesota was fifth overall.
