    DULUTH — Driving along Haines Road on April 3, I noticed a great gray owl sitting in the snow. Great gray owls are creatures of the boreal forest and only occasionally are found this far south. I was excited because great gray owls are the largest species of owl in the world by length, exceeding 2 feet long. These owls boast a wingspan that can reach more than 5 feet.

    ALONG THE BOIS BRULE RIVER, Wis. — Spring is here on the calendar, and the last Saturday in March means that a traditional first fishing rite of spring is here too. A half-hour before sunrise, the Northland’s first opening day of open-water fishing kicked off Wisconsin’s Bois Brule River with trout and salmon becoming legal to catch downstream of U.S. Highway 2. The fishing opener on the river is always the last Saturday in March.
