CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — The Great Bridge Bridge in Chesapeake, Va., was closed to traffic for an extended period Tuesday during rush hour because of a heat-related malfunction, according to the city. Firefighters were called in to spray the drawbridge with water to cool it down. The bridge was unable to close as Tuesday’s temperatures reached the mid-to-upper 90s, with heat indices between 105 and 112 degrees.

The malfunction was heat related, as Tuesday’s temperatures reached the mid-to-upper 90s, with heat indices between 105 and 112 degrees. Battlefield Boulevard South had been closed in both directions at the bridge since before 3:30 p.m. because of the malfunction.

SOUTHERN SHORES, N.C. (WAVY) – Fire destroyed a rental home on the Outer Banks of North Carolina Wednesday evening. Cliff Ogburn, Town Manager of Southern Shores, confirmed the call came in around 6:30 p.m. for crews to respond to 150 Ocean Boulevard. Southern Shores, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk and Duck fire departments all responded. Although Ogburn said the house was rented, there was no one home when the fire broke out and there were no injuries reported.
