SU football kickoff time announced for season opener

Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse football will travel to Atlanta on Aug. 30 to play Tennessee in the Aflac Kickoff for the 2025 season opener. It was announced Tuesday that the game will be televised on ABC with a noon kickoff time. The Aflac Kickoff will begin ABC’s Week 1 tripleheader that features three SEC vs ACC matchups. Following Syracuse’s game against Tennessee, Alabama will travel to Florida State while LSU travels to Clemson for the primetime matchup.

Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse’s Nov. 22 game at Notre Dame will have a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff time, Notre Dame announced Monday. Notre Dame is the first kickoff time that has been announced for Syracuse for the 2025 season. After a 10-win 2024, the Orange will play Notre Dame on NBC in the Fighting Irish’s normal television spot. Texas A&M, and rivals USC and Navy beat out the Orange for the primetime spots on Notre Dame’s home schedule.

Syracuse, N.Y. — Class of 2026 wide receiver Amare’ Gough has committed to Syracuse, he announced Saturday. Gough is listed as a four-star recruit out of Thomas Jefferson (Virginia). Syracuse assistant running backs coach Devin Redd recently completed a recruiting trip to Baltimore and DMV region, resulting in nearly 20 offers and Gough’s commitment. Syracuse gave Gough’s teammate, Class of 2027 linebacker and running back Reginald Weston, his first offer during the trip.

Syracuse, N.Y. — Former Syracuse fullback Keith “Thump” Belton was fired by the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks in an overhaul of their training staff, according to ESPN. The Mavericks were ravaged by injuries this season, most notably to Luka Doncic at Christmas, Anthony Davis in February and Kyrie Irving shortly after that. As a result, general manager Nico Harrison fired Belton and head trainer Dionne Calhoun.
Mark Petry undergoing season-ending knee surgery

Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse center Mark Petry will miss the 2025 season with a torn ACL, he announced Wednesday. Petry was Syracuse’s starting center coming out of spring practices following the transfer of David Wohlabaugh Jr. Now, he will undergo season-ending surgery for an ACL tear that was previously undetected for a year. “It was not an easy decision to make,” Petry said.

Syracuse, N.Y. — Delta Airlines will be adding additional capacity and flights for Syracuse’s games against Tennessee and Notre Dame in the upcoming season, the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority (SRAA) announced Friday. Syracuse will play Tennessee in Atlanta on Aug. 30 as part of the Aflac Kickoff, and travels to Notre Dame on Nov. 22 as the Orange play one of the most difficult schedules in the country in 2025.

Syracuse, N.Y. — Former Syracuse quarterback Michael Johnson Jr. has transferred to Akron, the Zips announced Thursday. Johnson spent his redshirt freshman season at Penn State in 2019 before spending the next three seasons at Florida Atlantic. His father was the Owls’ offensive coordinator in 2021 and joined Syracuse’s staff the following season. The Orange held a quarterback competition this spring to determine Kyle McCord’s successor and a backup for that successor.

Syracuse, N.Y. — UNC offensive lineman Zach Rice has committed to Syracuse, according to 247 Sports. Rice was a five-star recruit in the Class of 2022 and logged a total of just 44 offensive snaps with the Tar Heels. Syracuse lost linemen Enrique Cruz Jr., David Wohlabaugh Jr., Codie Hornsby and Willie Goodacre to the transfer portal this offseason. Now, the Orange have added Rice, Austin Collins and Kam Pringle to fill out Dale Williams’ room.
Syracuse’s Max Mang signs with Indianapolis Colts

Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse tight end Max Mang has signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent. Mang is the 12th Syracuse player from the 2024 team to find an NFL home. The German tight end appeared in all but one game in his five seasons with Syracuse as a blocking tight end and special teams player. He finished his collegiate career with just nine catches for 60 yards. Mang was one of the Dino Babers-era players that opted to stay in Syracuse for 2024.
