SAN DIEGO -- When the Padres’ Dylan Cease took the mound to start Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, a fresh tune accompanied him. His walk-out song was “Money For Nothing” and in some ways it told Cease’s tale. The Pirates prevailed, 5-0, after dropping their last 11 games against the Padres. Pittsburgh won for the first time in 12 contests between the teams, snapping a streak to even the three-game series.

IIt’s just a voluntary series of off-season workouts, so Los Angeles Chargers left tackle Rashawn Slater’s absence isn’t big news. Yet. But maybe it transforms into something bigger, as the massive Slater is entrusted with protecting quarterback Justin Herbert’s blindside and is in need of a contract upgrade. Slater, a two-time Pro Bowler, is scheduled to earn $19.04 million this season after L.A. picked up the fifth-year option of his $35.6 million rookie deal, according to Over The Cap.

It’s a birthday bash that should feature 100 baseball bats on a cake instead of candles. American Legion Baseball is celebrating a century of providing countless teenagers the chance to play our grand game. That includes our region, which has seen a resurgence of ALB since 2017 and now boasts 14 teams and some 300 players ages 15-19. “We always told people that we never ask the players for money,’’ Peter Rolf-Ohnstad said.

The Los Angeles Chargers will kick off their preseason at the hallowed grounds of Canton, Ohio. The Chargers are playing the Detroit Lions in the Hall of Fame game on July 31 as the NFL christens its 106th season. The contest is part of the enshrinement week ceremonies, which will included the induction of former Chargers tight end Antonio Gates. The extra date in Ohio means the Chargers will have four exhibition games, with one at home and the additional two on the road.
