The governor has signed a bill that updates the Connecticut Firefighters Cancer Relief Program. The updates include streamlining claims so that firefighters get benefits quicker, extending benefits to state firefighters working at UConn and Bradley Airport, and adding skin cancer to the list of covered conditions. According to research conducted by the CDC, firefighters are 1.39 times more likely to develop skin cancer.

Archbishop Christopher Coyne of the Archdiocese of Hartford said he was stunned when he heard American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected the new pope. "The first words out of my mouth were [two-word phrase], of which the first word is 'holy,' and I will leave the second word to your imagination," he said. He doesn't know Pope Leo well, meeting him briefly last year in Rome, but he's heard he's levelheaded and a good leader.

Help is on the way for a small community in Israel that was attacked by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023. The Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford partnered with Kibbutz Sufa, a communal settlement about 1.7 miles away from the Gaza Strip. "This morning was different, much, much different, hundreds of rockets in a few seconds," Zohar Hubara, a founder of Kibbutz Sufa, recalled.

Saturday's storm left a trail of damage in parts of the state, taking down trees and leaving neighbors in the dark for hours. The wind ripped a tree's roots out of the earth and it fell just inches away from two buildings housing businesses on East Center Street in Manchester. In Barkhamsted, the damage slowed down traffic. A tree fell on a powerline on East River Road, taking out the electricity for hours. At one point, more than 10,000 people across the state lost power, according to Eversource.

Small businesses across the country and in Connecticut are bracing for the impacts of tariffs. Mellow Monkey in Stratford sells a wide variety of gifts and décor. While prices haven't changed yet, store owner Howard Aspinwall believes the impact of 145% tariff on Chinese goods could hit around the holiday time, the store's busiest time of the year. Aspinwall said things could cost more or not be available at all if vendors cancel shipments.
