Missy Mogle’s grieving family and friends joined with complete strangers for a vigil May 29 in honor of the 5-year-old girl who died after reportedly suffering terrible abuse. More than 100 people gathered outside the Southwood Community Center to pay tribute to Missy and process their pain together. Missy, who resided in the neighborhood, died May 19 after she stopped breathing at home.

A vigil for Missy Mogle, the 5-year-old girl who died after her mother and stepfather allegedly abused her, will be held May 29 in Southwood. The vigil is planned for 6:30 p.m., Thursday, May 29, behind the neighborhood's Community Center at Southwood Central Park Lake. Tallahassee police were called to Missy’s residence on Kipling Court in Southwood the morning of May 19 after she stopped breathing. She was taken to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

Five-year-old Melissa Mogle died on May 19 after enduring severe abuse, allegedly at the hands of her stepfather and mother. Authorities investigated previous abuse allegations against the stepfather but made no arrests. The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) also investigated but closed the case, and a judge released the stepfather from jail after his conviction in an unrelated child sex sting.

Melissa "Missy" Mogle, 5, died May 19, 2025, after police were called to her home in SouthWood where she had been found not breathing and unresponsive. Her mother, Chloe Spencer, and stepfather, Daniel Spencer, have been arrested on child abuse charges in her death. The Florida Department of Children and Families investigated allegations that a 5-year-old girl who died May 19 with obvious signs of abuse had been molested eight months earlier by her stepfather.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — A grand jury has indicted a Florida State University student on murder charges in the mass shooting on campus last month that left two people dead and six others injured. Phoenix Ikner, 20, was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder and seven counts of attempted murder. The seven counts of attempted murder include two people he allegedly fired at but didn't hit during the April 17 attack on the Tallahassee campus, according to the indictment released on May 14.
