LAPEER — Chadwick Shane Mobley, 44, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility for parole this afternoon by 40th Circuit Court Judge Mike Nolan for the Nov. 14, 2011 shooting death of Andrea Eilber, 20, of Otisville. In February, Mobley pleaded no contest to murder. A no contest plea is basically the same as a guilty plea. More than 20 people were in the courtroom for the sentencing, 14 years after Eilber was shot and killed — including many members and friends of the Eilber family.

LAPEER — The Lapeer City Commission and city officials on Monday approved numerous event applications for activities and programs planned this spring and summer in Lapeer. Readying for another season, downtown Lapeer restaurants and bars were granted right-of-way licenses to allow the businesses to serve customers in seating areas on the City’s sidewalks. LAPEER — The Lapeer City Commission on Monday evening is expected to discuss the possibility of initiating a road diet for Genesee Street from Main Street (M-24) to Saginaw Street. The City Commission will consider a proposal to hire Flint-based Rowe Professional Services to conduct a pedestrian crossing study in the amount of $2,900 and a traffic data collection and road diet study in the amount of $5,800.

LAPEER — The Lapeer County unemployment rate in February increased from 6.6% in January to 6.8%, the fifth consecutive month of increased joblessness. In Lapeer County, in February 2,998 residents were collecting unemployment insurance — an increase of 97 people since January. In February, Lapeer and Shiawassee counties both had a 6.8% jobless rate — the 34th and 35th highest unemployment rates of the state’s 83 counties.

DRYDEN TWP. — In 2023, Matt Butterfield, 40, of Mayfield Township, was diagnosed with stage four glioblastoma (brain cancer). The former plumber who worked for Keith Brace Plumbing of North Branch is under hospice care and doesn’t have too long to live. LAPEER — The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Lapeer County until 10 p.m. this evening (Sunday). The watch is also in effect for Genesee, Macomb, Oakland, Sanilac, St. Clair and Tuscola counties. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is issued when atmospheric conditions are ideal for thunderstorms capable of winds of 58 mph or greater and quarter-sized hail or greater. This means to watch out for changing weather conditions and the potential for a warning.

METAMORA TWP. — A local man walking his dog along Baldwin Road, just north of Brocker Road, in Metamora Township was struck by a vehicle traveling at an excessive speed Thursday morning, resulting in the death of his dog and severe injuries to the driver of the vehicle.
