People are remembering a Brantford, Ont. woman as a beloved mother and welcoming friend after she died in a fire on Monday. “She’s always smiling,” Jeannie Winger, a family friend, said. “Always just a bright – always smiling. Just a beautiful person.”Family and friends of 49-year-old Charlene Shellard are still trying to come to terms with her sudden loss. Shellard died in a fire at a Brantford townhouse complex on Buchanan Crescent.

The developer behind a large student housing project says it’s been forced to pause the start of construction due to a disagreement with the City of Guelph over development charges. Forum Asset Management, the developer, said the city’s decision to charge over $15 million in development charges makes the project “economically unviable” without significantly raising costs for students. Forum Asset Management received approval from the city to construct two buildings featuring 587 beds.

As the Kitchener Rangers gear up for the Western Conference Finals, the team is reflecting on the playoffs and that historic comeback. After trailing the Windsor Spitfires 3-0 in the Western Conference Semi-Final, the Rangers clawed their way back, ultimately winning game 7 in overtime. “Really I just kind of blacked out in the moment,” said Rangers forward Luke Ellinas, who scored the overtime winner. Ellinas scored the Ranger’s other goal in their 2-1 game 7 win.

After a decade of trying and some close calls, the Stratford District Secondary School (SDSS) robotics team is going to the Vex Robotics Competition world championship. “I was really excited. I know a lot of people on the team were really excited. It’s the first time that our organization has made worlds in the ten-something years it’s been running,” said Grade 10 team member Declan O’Neil.

The Waterloo Catholic District School Board has a new chair as it faces growing division over a controversial motion that could see Pride flags removed from Catholic schools. Trustee Renee Kraft was selected to lead the board during a meeting Monday night, following the sudden resignation of former chair Bob Sikora last month. Kraft and acting chair Linda Cuff both received four votes each from trustees, forcing a tie-breaker decided by drawing numbers.
