SPRINGTOWN — Not a bad night. On Sept. 22, the Springtown Porcupines football team played in front of a packed stadium and a rowdy hometown crowd, dominated the Glen Rose Tigers 51-27, crowned a new queen, and moved into first place. The victory pushed the Porcupines’ record to 3-2 in District 4-4A, good enough for a first-place tie with Mineral Wells. Springtown began the game by driving into the red zone and putting itself in first-and-goal position at the Glen Rose 5-yard line.

The best kickers possess nerves of steel in addition to good aims, and that takes time to develop. Tyler Reyes, a senior, has played soccer but is new to the game of football. He is ACS’s placekicker and extra point kicker this year and played well despite his inexperience. One of the reasons Reyes is developing skills is his tutorial relationship with Logan Malewiski, who graduated in 2021 as the most prolific kicker in school history.

AZLE — The temperature in Berlin, Germany, was mid-70s when Mariska van der Woude boarded an airplane headed for the United States in early August. When her plane touched down at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, van der Woude stepped into a 100-degree Texas scorcher. The heat blast made her woozy for a moment. “My body had to get used to the temperature,” she said. Acclimation didn’t take long. She has embraced many new things since arriving as a foreign exchange student at Azle High School.

On Sept. 19, the team competed against Rider and, afterward, celebrated its upperclassmen. “These athletes have represented Azle tennis in the best way possible as players and, more importantly, as leaders,” said head coach Connor Mason. “We are so proud of all of them.”

On Sept. 12, Smith, now a senior, made 22 digs at the libero position to help Springtown sweep the Sanger Indians 3-0 in front of a hometown Porcupines crowd. Afterward, the team celebrated Smith surpassing 1,000 digs for her career.

SPRINGTOWN — The Porcupines have a chance to make it three victories in a row when they face Glen Rose on Friday, Sept. 22, at home. After losing the first two games of the season, the Porcupines have won their last two. They beat Hirschi on Sept. 8. Then, they traveled to Carrollton on Sept. 14 to face Creekview for a Thursday night game and won 35-21. Dallin Fabrizius, a senior left guard, predicted the Porcupines would be ready for war against Creekview.

Springtown cross-country team keeps legs churningSPRINGTOWN — Several Porcupines cross-country runners set their personal best times at the recent Pilot Point meet. On Sept. 15, the Springtown runners traveled to Pilot Point, and Wesley Payne medaled after placing in the top 10. Payne and 11 other Springtown runners set personal records at the event. Next up, the cross-country team will travel to the Waxahachie Sports Complex on Thursday, Sept. 21, to compete at the Waxahachie Life Mustang Stampede.

The boys and girls teams competed on Sept. 13. “This is the earliest in the season we have ever swum, but we were pleased with our performance and were able to identify areas of strength as well as areas of improvement,” said head coach Amy Estes.
