Members of Public Address City Council on Matters Relating to Arts at Relatively Fast Monday Meeting

A handful of individuals addressed Bridgeport City Council at Monday’s meeting, but the majority of the comments focused on the arts and none of them involved recent issues that have caused turmoil in the city. Instead, two of the four individuals speaking during the public forum addressed their support for an ordinance that would provide resolution on an issue that came up in May of 2024 and drew the ire of several, including those in the arts and culture community.

Nearly two years after torrential rain led to a massive slip between two retail plazas and crippled a section of city roadway, a potential permanent fix is on the way. At tonight’s Bridgeport City Council meeting, approval will be sought on a contract that would address all the issues above with funding set aside exceeding three quarters of a million dollars. It is part of a busy agenda for City Council.

I still remember going there. I was maybe 7 or 8 years old. It was located in Clarksburg, in the area where Sheetz is situated today just across from the Veteran’s Administration Park. My brother, Tim, remembers it, too. He confirmed my thoughts along with one of the offspring of a North Central West Virginia food dynasty. Back in the 1970s, there was a restaurant called Better Quality Foods. Or, as my brother and I have called it, BQF.

Bridgeport is a city filled with sports tradition and a rich sports history, most of it associated with Bridgeport High School. This current school year is proof of that. With the spring sports season for 2025 still in its earliest stages, Bridgeport High School already has a record-tying five team state championships to its credit. Each season special, and each team that did not win put in the hard work and dedication that made their seasons special as well.
