TULSA, Okla. — In 2021, Zarmin Shinwari moved from Afghanistan to Tulsa to build a safer life for his family. Shinwari’s wife and three children, ages 11, nine and six, are grieving the loss. Shinwari drove for Uber as a second job to support his family. It was on that early morning drive, around 2 a.m. on May 31, the crash happened westbound on I-44 near 165th East Ave. OHP said 41-year-old Shinwari died at the scene. “He was a kind husband, a loving father, and a respected member of our community.

People visiting graves on Memorial Day at Rose Hill Cemetery near Admiral and Yale are upset with how it’s maintained. Visitors brought decorations for their loved ones’ graves, but to get to the graves, they also brought their own lawn equipment. Becky Whitten’s family has been decorating graves for 95 years. Her grandma passed away in 1930. Whitten said the Memorial Day weekend, her sister also helped cut grass around a tombstone.

That’s our only goal. Every single memorial, we’re out here,” said Anthony Gutierrez. Gutierrez and his family, including a 14-year old and an eight-year-old, visit lake Keystone every year from Beggs. “It’s kind of a ritual for us. We love campling,” said Gutierrez.

The Phoenix Development Council is working to make the 36th Street north corridor a culinary hotspot. City leaders are working with local entrepreneurs to create sustainable, permanent dining options along 36th Street North. They are looking at the possibilities to turn the vacant lot across from the 36th Street North Event Center into a vibrant hub.
