European Commissioner Michael McGrath has said the European Union will do everything it can to avoid a trade war but it needs "a willing partner in the form of the United States" to agree new and stable terms of trade. Speaking in Killarney, at the Global Economic Summit, Commissioner McGrath said the EU is confident that "if the goodwill is there and if there is a willingness on both sides to compromise, an agreement will be reached" on tariffs.

A man in his late 30s has drowned after getting into difficulty on a section of a river near Mallow in Co Cork this evening. Gardaí and the emergency services responded to a call to the popular fishing location at the River Blackwater at Dysart, Dromagh, at around 7pm. The man was recovered from the water shortly afterwards by members of Cork County Fire Service. Gardaí said the man's body has been taken to Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place.

The Irish Naval Service celebrated the graduation of its latest crop of Able Rate sailors at a special Passing Out parade at the service's Haulbowline headquarters in Cork harbour. Commodore Michael Malone said the 20 newly qualified sailors reflected the regeneration of the country's naval service which has witnessed a major fall-off in numbers in recent years.

A man in his 30s was arrested for questioning in connection with a hit-and-run in Midleton, Co Cork in which three cyclists were hit by a car. The collision happened at around 8.05pm on the R627 at West Park. The man failed to remain at the scene. The three male cyclists were taken to Cork University Hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The road has since re-opened to traffics following a technical examination.
