Firefighters tackle blaze at former convent in Cork

Firefighters from Cork City Fire Brigade tackled a major blaze at the city's former Good Shepherd Convent in Sunday's Well overnight. A number of hot spots remain this morning, with crews unable to enter the building because the Victorian structure is dangerous. Up to 20 firefighters fought the blaze at the derelict building, which has been the subject of several large fires in the past two decades.

A 29-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Daniel O'Sullivan in Youghal, Co Cork, on Monday night. Reece Keogh, with an address at North Main Street, Youghal, appeared before a sitting of Midleton District Court where he was charged with the murder of Mr O'Sullivan at Tynan's Bar, 147 North Main Street, Youghal on 14 April, contrary to Common Law.

New platform opens at Cork's Kent station

A step closer to a ten minute 'turn-up and ride' rail service for Cork commuters has been reached with the opening of a new 220 metre platform at Kent Station. Platform 6 will allow for a significant increase in train service frequency, with commuters able to travel between Mallow in the north of the county, and Cobh/Midleton in the east without having to change trains at Kent Station.

Boy found guilty of rape, assault of girl at race meeting

A 15-year-old boy has been found guilty of the rape and sexual assault of a then 16-year-old girl at a race meeting in Limerick on St Stephen's Day over two years ago. The verdicts, by a jury of nine women and two men, follow a trial which has been ongoing for the past four weeks. The jury has retired for the day and will continue their deliberations on charges against two other teenagers tomorrow.

Two women have died and two young children were injured in a two-vehicle collision in Mallow, Co Cork. The incident happened on the N72 Killarney to Mallow Road near Cork Racecourse at around 3.50pm yesterday afternoon. The deceased, aged in the 60s and 40s, were the two drivers of the vehicles. The woman in her 40s was travelling with children at the time of the incident. The children, a boy and girl, were taken to hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.

Two people have been killed and three others injured, including a young child who was seriously hurt, in a two-vehicle collision in Mallow. The incident happened at around 3.30pm on Racecourse Road near the Dromahane turnoff on the N72 Killarney to Mallow Road. Major traffic diversions are in place, with the emergency services still at the scene. It is understood the deceased were the two drivers of the vehicles.
Body of 78-year-old man discovered at Cork city apartment

An investigation is under way after the body of a 78-year-old man was discovered in his home at Mayfield in Cork city last night. The alarm was raised by a neighbour who had not seen the man for a number of days. Gardai discovered the man's body at the ground floor apartment at Glenamoy Lawn at around 9pm. The scene was cordoned off and a forensic examination was carried out. The man's body was removed to Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will be carried out tomorrow.
