Anglers have been urged to report any sightings of Pacific pink salmon in Irish rivers this summer, with experts saying they pose a threat to the survival of the native Atlantic salmon and sea trout. The migratory salmon species have appeared in unprecedented numbers in the country's river systems in recent years, especially in the south west, west and north west. They are described as being blue/green to steel blue on the back, with silver sides and a white underbelly.

A 31-year-old tattoo artist has been found guilty of the murder of a 33-year-old chef in Cobh, Co Cork, in March of 2024. Dylan Scannell, of O'Rahilly Street, in Cobh had pleaded guilty to manslaughter, but denied murdering father-of-two Ian Baitson. The jury of six women and six men at the Central Criminal Court in Cork returned a verdict of guilty this afternoon after deliberating for four hours and five minutes.

European Commissioner Michael McGrath has said the European Union will do everything it can to avoid a trade war but it needs "a willing partner in the form of the United States" to agree new and stable terms of trade. Speaking in Killarney, at the Global Economic Summit, Commissioner McGrath said the EU is confident that "if the goodwill is there and if there is a willingness on both sides to compromise, an agreement will be reached" on tariffs.

A man in his late 30s has drowned after getting into difficulty on a section of a river near Mallow in Co Cork this evening. Gardaí and the emergency services responded to a call to the popular fishing location at the River Blackwater at Dysart, Dromagh, at around 7pm. The man was recovered from the water shortly afterwards by members of Cork County Fire Service. Gardaí said the man's body has been taken to Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place.
