    THE late Fr Wilfrid Harrington, who was a noted Irish biblical scholar and grew up in Eyeries, has been remembered as an ‘outstanding teacher’ who was also ‘kind and encouraging.’The 98-year-old, who was named Jack before he entered the Dominican Order to take the name Wilfrid, passed away on April 16th with more than 40 books to his name at the time of his death.

    CONSTRUCTION work on St Michael’s Residential and Community Project on Weir Street in Bandon has been paused after the contractor involved was recently put into receivership. A spokesperson for St Michael’s Residential and Community Project said on Tuesday that the contractor on their development has had all his sites in Cork city and county shut down, which includes the Bandon site. ‘This is a very unfortunate event for us as our project is over 70% complete.

    About 55 people attended a public meeting in Clonakilty on Tuesday evening, where discussion were held on the possible use for a block of vacant Council-owned buildings on Kent Street in the town.     AN online petition against plans to open a casino in Bandon has already collected over 1,300 signatures in just a few short days since it was set up by a former county councillor. Leeside Leisure Centre Ltd is seeking planning permission from Cork County Council to open a gaming/amusements arcade complex at the former Stables Bar in the town. Speaking to The Southern Star, former Fianna Fáil Councillor Sean O’Donovan said a gambling arcade is something that Bandon doesn’t need.
