TOMÁS Markey from St Brogan’s College in Bandon has been named the BT Young Scientist of the Year for his project on removing CO2 from the atmosphere. The award was presented to Tomás this evening at the RDS in Dublin. The project entered by Tomás, aged 18, and in sixth year in St Brogan's College, is a system that reduces the cost of carbon dioxide sequestration in the fight against climate change.

A NATIONAL mental health charity, is urging people not to donate to any so-called 'fundraisers' who go door-to-door in West Cork, looking for cash or tap-to-donate donations on its behalf. Turn2Me charity has received reports from people in the Innishannon and Kinsale areas that a man who has been described as 'medium height, dark greying hair, hair gelled, in his 40s' who is going door-to-door and said he is collecting money on Turn2Me’s behalf.

UISCE Éireann has said this morning that it is working to address supply interruptions that some customers in both Dunmanway and Clonakilty may be experiencing, as a result of the impacts of Storm Bert. ‘Our priority is the provision of clean safe drinking water to communities and the safety of water services staff who work to make that happen,’ they said. Due to mechanical problems at the Clonakilty plant following Storm Bert, the production capacity at the facility has been impacted.

CAMPAIGNERS against a salmon farm off Shot Head in Bantry bay have said they are not too concerned about the reports last week that the High Court has decided that the licence application for the farm should be reconsidered. Mr Justice David Holland, in a ruling published last week, said he had jurisdiction to seek the reconsideration of the licence by both the Aquaculture Licence Appeals Board and the Minister for the Marine.
