THE Catholic Bishop of Derry has spoken out against the religious grouping SSPX Resistance, which has a base in West Cork. Bishop Donal McKeown, in the parish bulletin, reminded his parishioners that SSPX Resistance, which practises the Latin mass, is not connected to the Catholic Church. The same group has a base in Reenascreena outside Dunmanway, where it is believed a number of locals attend the Tridentine (Latin) mass in a small makeshift chapel on the site.

AFTER a break last year, BBC presenter Graham Norton has confirmed that he is going to host this year’s Ahakista festival quiz once more. There was huge disappointment last year when it was announced that the popular presenter, who has a home in the Sheep’s Head village, was taking time out from the ticket-only event, which has been held in the pretty seaside location for several years. The venue rotates between the two local pubs – Arundels and The Tin Pub.

THE controversial founder of an ultra conservative religious group with a base in Reenascreena has died. In 1988, Williamson was consecrated as a bishop by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, who had broken away from Rome and set up the Society of Saint Pius the tenth (SSPX) as a result of what he considered the over-liberalisation of the church after Vatican II reforms.

CORK South West TD and founder of the Independent Ireland party, Michael Collins, confirmed this week that the party had been asked on Wednesday to enter discussions on the formation of government. Speaking to The Southern Star on Wednesday afternoon, the TD said that talks were expected to begin in Dublin on Thursday of this week.
