Everett City Council questioned Mayor Carlo DeMaria about money that they say is needed for legal fees in connection with alleged overpayments made to the mayor during a budget meeting Wednesday night. According to a public letter issued by Inspector General Jeffrey Shapiro, DeMaria received the $180,000 through a misapplication of the city's mayoral longevity ordinance between 2016 and 2021. The longevity ordinance was originally intended to pay the mayor $10,000 after each full term served.
