Brieanna Charlebois, The Canadian Press - | Story: 555375The BC Wildfire Service is reporting that the largest of the province's major fires in the northeast has more than doubled in size in the past 24 hours. The Pocket Knife Creek blaze, which is the result of two fires merging over the weekend, now measures nearly 1,300 square kilometres. It's believed to have been caused by lightning and has triggered an evacuation order and alert from the Peace River Regional District.

The roof of the Cheakamus Centre longhouse was damaged in a fire Wednesday night. Squamish Fire Rescue firefighters received the 911 call about the blaze at the longhouse on Paradise Valley Road at about 5:30 p.m. on June 4, according to District of Squamish spokesperson Christina Moore. Occupants of the 2,300-square-foot building were evacuated, with everyone safe and accounted for. "Crews extinguished the fire, and the damage was confined to the roof structure of the longhouse," Moore said.

The results are in. Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) members have spoken, and some significant changes are coming to how they are governed. On May 31, Election and Referendum Law voting wrapped up with in-person ballots cast at polling stations in Squamish at Totem Hall and in Chief Joe Mathias Centre in West Vancouver. All told, 899 members voted—both online and in person. There are 3,300 eligible voters within the Nation.

She's riding back and bringing friends. Former Squamish local Suzanne Jolly, is returning to town as a director, producer and main character of the documentary A Wilder Way. The one-night-only screening of her film is set for Friday, June 20, at Moto '79. The documentary is an adventure story featuring Jolly and three other women on their motorcycles taking a small boat to explore a remote section of wilderness on British Columbia's west coast.
