COLUMBUS, Ohio— Ohio Senate Republicans’ new budget plan would require Cuyahoga County to keep giving the Cleveland Browns a third of the county’s “sin tax” revenue, even if the team moves to suburban Brook Park. Under the budget plan, unveiled Tuesday, county officials would also be permitted to double the county’s liquor tax from $3 per gallon to $6 per gallon for stadium construction and/or maintenance – but only if voters approve it.

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Ohio Senate Republicans are rejecting plans to issue $600 million in state bonds to help pay for a new Cleveland Browns stadium in suburban Brook Park. Instead, the Senate GOP’s initial state budget plan, unveiled Tuesday, would get the money from a very different source: raiding the state’s $4.8 billion unclaimed property fund.

The idea, advanced with bipartisan support, is that the toothy, olive-gold fish deserves to be on the list of Ohio’s official state symbols, along with the Ohio buckeye (the state tree), the white-tailed deer (the state animal), and the ladybug (the state insect), among many others.
