Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following the death of a young teenager who was taking part in a motorsport racing event in Cork on Sunday afternoon. The fatal incident took place at approximately 3:30pm at a track near Castletown-Kinneigh during an event hosted by the Cork Autograss Racing Club. The 13-year-old girl was the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident, understood to be a modified car.

A 9/11 survivor from Cork was among those to have their travel plans thrown into chaos following the closure of Heathrow Airport. Eight flights between Cork Airport and Heathrow were cancelled after a fire at an electrical station shut the London airport and impacted 1,350 flights to and from the English capital. Approximately 100 children in Cork have yet to be offered a school place for this September, it has emerged, as parents prepare to protest on Saturday over the ongoing issues in special education. The children are still waiting for an offer of a place either in a special school or in an autism class attached to a mainstream school. The parents, as well as others hoping to highlight failures in accessing vital therapies for their children, will protest in Cork City from 2pm.

A Government agency is set to spend up to almost €100,000 on a research project to discover why there’s been “exceptional” growth in demand for special school and special class places in recent years. The National Council for Special Education (NCSE) has gone out to tender for a contractor to deliver this research, as part of its remit to identify and plan for the establishment of special classes and special schools across the country.

The State Examinations Commission (SEC) is to review the accommodations it offers visually impaired students in the State exams at the request of the human rights watchdog. The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC) has used its legal powers to invite the SEC to carry out an equality review of how it administers the Reasonable Accommodations at Certificate Examinations Scheme (the ‘Race’ scheme) for students with a visual impairment.

Interest in further education such as apprenticeships or alternative routes to university entry are growing in popularity as a record number of further education and training offers were taken up last year. In 2024, more than 400,000 further education and training (FET) places were taken up by almost 230,000 learners for the first time ever. Provisional data released today by Solas shows that there has been a steady increase in FET participation in the last five years.
