SOUTHINGTON — The past year saw new developments, major retirements, a municipal election and progress toward a new library building in Southington. A proposal to audit the tax roles of hundreds of local businesses met with opposition and was eventually postponed. While business owners are required to list equipment, machines and other items associated with their company, Assessor Teresa Babon said nearly 500 refuse to do so or don’t specify what property they have.

SOUTHINGTON — Town leaders are close to approving expansion plans for the library following a redesign made possible with state money. Jim Morelli, a town councilor and library building committee chairman, said his group approved a new look for the library and is settling on colors for some of the exterior materials. He’s pleased with the changes. “It’s hard to look at a drawing with some colors on a page and visualize what it’s going to look like,” Morelli said.

SOUTHINGTON – Town Manager Mark Sciota announced he’ll retire in June of next year, closing a 29-year career in town government. Sciota has worked as town attorney, deputy town manager and finally town manager, a position he was given in 2017.

With fewer than half of third-graders statewide proficient readers, state leaders are implementing new curriculum requirements for school districts. But those changes, mandated in a 2021 Right to Read bill, aren’t universally popular with local school leaders. This past week, the state Department of Education announced which districts would be granted waivers, allowing local school systems to continue with their current curriculum.

SOUTHINGTON – After a weekend crash that took down the Barnes Museum sign and part of its front fence, town officials say they’re working quickly to fix things up as best as they can before a host of holiday events. Christina Volpe, Barnes Museum curator, said she was shocked to wake up Saturday morning and hear about the accident. She and other town officials have been working to improve the museum’s exterior and grounds at 85 N.
