The students’ ambitions were fostered by support at all levels, including the very top, as Thompson was instrumental for the chapter’s post-COVID growth. It started with Armstrong getting a spot on Thompson’s calendar. The two were instantly able to bond over being NSBE members, and Thompson wanted to help the organization. Starting in 2022, the NSBE leadership has had monthly meetings with Thompson where they would discuss fundraising, strategy and problem-solving.

Christine Fischer, adjunct instructor of creativity and design thinking for the Horn Entrepreneurship program at UD, guided the participants through a human-centered design simulation to uncover unmet needs, identify a “wicked problem,” design a prototype and share the solution. Ryan Crawford, instructor of project management with UD Professional and Continuing Studies, provided an in-depth session on the roles, requirements and steps needed for successful project management.

Rising junior Megan MacWade didn’t expect to win this year’s Seitz Award. In fact, she didn’t initially plan on applying to the University of Delaware at all. “UD was such an unexpected college for me to go to. It kind of came out of nowhere,” she said. “My mom told me to look here, and I fell in love with the campus.

On Saturday, March 2, students braved the rain and gathered in Trabant University Center for the inaugural Amplify Leadership Conference. Amplify is a new spin on the Change Makers Conference, which was implemented in 2020 — under Creative Leadership, Innovation and Service’s (CLIS) former department name, Blue Hen Leadership Program (BHLP) — scaling back three rounds of breakout sessions to two rounds and one keynote speaker versus multiple.

Established in 1954, the Seitz Award recognizes a University of Delaware first-year or sophomore student in good academic and disciplinary standing who exemplifies the “We Are Blue Hen” values of respect, openness, innovation, engagement and mentorship. Award winners are granted $1,500. The most recent recipient is Reaghan Vasilenko, a student who admitted that she likes to stay busy.
