Rock Canyon’s Head Coach Sean Kelty is still waiting to see how his girls soccer team develops while Chaparral Coach Greg Gillmore is encouraged. Those comments from the coaches came after Chap and Rock Canyon played to a 0-0 tie on March 27 in a Continental League match at Halftime Help Stadium. Rock Canyon, a school that has been the state tournament runner-up in three of the past four seasons, dominated the second half with possession but couldn’t score against the scrappy Wolverines.

Head Coach Jeff Platt summarized Valor Christian’s loss to Eaglecrest by saying it was just one of those games. Eaglecrest won Colorado’s 6A boys basketball state championship with a 65-63 win over the Eagles on March 15 at the Denver Coliseum. The Eagles who played well at times but couldn’t hold off Eaglecrest’s scoring as Valor’s bid to win back-to-back state titles failed. Eaglecrest (26-2) captured its first state title since 2017.

Mountain Vista’s Cal Baskind had to erase some memories before the Great 8 state boys basketball playoff game against Chaparral on March 8 at the Denver Coliseum. First, Baskind had a poor shooting night, going 6-16, when the Golden Eagles defeated Chaparral 82-72 on Feb. 21. And then he managed only four points in Vista’s 63-62 loss to Smoky Hill in last season’s state tournament at the Coliseum.

Lutheran, the top-seeded team in the boys Class 5A state tournament bracket, needed a wake-up call on Feb. 28. The Lions used two different point spurts to gain control of the game against No. 32 Golden and finally earned a 65-59 victory in the first-round contest. Lutheran improved its season record to 21-3 with its 21st straight home win going back to last year. The team has now won eight straight games to end the season.
