Cherry Creek girls tennis coach Andy Zurcher claims his team is playing better. But still, he admits Ralston Valley is the team to beat when it comes to the state tournament. Once again, there will be an individual tournament to declare state champions and a team tournament to determine the best team in the state. Individual regional tournaments this year must be completed by May 30.

Rock Canyon’s Head Coach Sean Kelty is still waiting to see how his girls soccer team develops while Chaparral Coach Greg Gillmore is encouraged. Those comments from the coaches came after Chap and Rock Canyon played to a 0-0 tie on March 27 in a Continental League match at Halftime Help Stadium. Rock Canyon, a school that has been the state tournament runner-up in three of the past four seasons, dominated the second half with possession but couldn’t score against the scrappy Wolverines.

Head Coach Jeff Platt summarized Valor Christian’s loss to Eaglecrest by saying it was just one of those games. Eaglecrest won Colorado’s 6A boys basketball state championship with a 65-63 win over the Eagles on March 15 at the Denver Coliseum. The Eagles who played well at times but couldn’t hold off Eaglecrest’s scoring as Valor’s bid to win back-to-back state titles failed. Eaglecrest (26-2) captured its first state title since 2017.

Mountain Vista’s Cal Baskind had to erase some memories before the Great 8 state boys basketball playoff game against Chaparral on March 8 at the Denver Coliseum. First, Baskind had a poor shooting night, going 6-16, when the Golden Eagles defeated Chaparral 82-72 on Feb. 21. And then he managed only four points in Vista’s 63-62 loss to Smoky Hill in last season’s state tournament at the Coliseum.

Lutheran, the top-seeded team in the boys Class 5A state tournament bracket, needed a wake-up call on Feb. 28. The Lions used two different point spurts to gain control of the game against No. 32 Golden and finally earned a 65-59 victory in the first-round contest. Lutheran improved its season record to 21-3 with its 21st straight home win going back to last year. The team has now won eight straight games to end the season.

Mountain Vista found its touch at the free throw line just in time for the Golden Eagles to earn a share of the Continental League boys basketball title. Vista hit 10 straight free throws in the final 54.6 seconds of the game against Chaparral to earn an 82-72 victory on Feb. 21 and claim a share of the league regular season championship. Chaparral suffered its first league setback and finished with a 9-1 record. Mountain Vista and ThunderRidge also finished with 9-1 records in the league.

Cherry Creek contained Grandview standout Sienna Betts for half of the game, but Grandview got production from other players in the Centennial League girls basketball decider over the Bruins. Ava Chang scored 24 points and Deija Roberson added 10 as Grandview raced to a 54-32 win in both teams’ regular season finale on Feb. 12. The contest was for first place in the Centennial League and matched the Wolves, second-ranked in the MaxPreps poll, against third-ranked Cherry Creek.

Kate McKinnon is a freshman on the Cherry Creek High School swimming team and is already a four-time state champion. McKinnon won four events at the Class 5A state swimming championships held on Feb. 7 at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton to help Cherry Creek capture its fifth straight state title and 30th overall in the past 51 years. In the 50-yard freestyle, McKinnon beat Ella Gaca Thiel of Fossil Ridge in a close race for her first state title with a time of 22.79 seconds.

ThunderRidge’s girls basketball team worked hard in practice to get ready for the opening game of their Continental League schedule on Jan. 17. And, the hard work paid dividends as ThunderRidge notched a 43-33 win over the visiting Wolverines who came into the game with nine wins. ThunderRidge is now 1-0 in league play and 7-6 overall while Chaparral saw its record drop to 9-5 overall and 0-1 in the Continental League.

By Jim Benton - Special to Colorado Community Media via Highlands Ranch Herald, ThunderRidge boys basketball coach Joe Ortiz finds himself in a position of waiting after the Grizzlies lost a 58-49 non-conference game to George Washington on Jan. 11. The Grizzlies didn't play well in the second and third quarters and fell too far behind during the defeat. ThunderRidge now has a 9-3 record.
