This is the first issue of Reset: San Francisco, a series looking at efforts to restore San Francisco’s urban economic core, specifically downtown. It will appear periodically in the Business Times, both online and in print, throughout the remainder of the year. Its goal is to cover, and help shape, the debate over downtown’s evolution as it searches for a new role and a changed future.

Protesters against the war in Gaza shut down two major Bay Area traffic arteries Monday morning, causing widespread gridlock and commuter chaos. Traffic was stopped in both directions of Interstate 880 in Oakland and later also on the Golden Gate Bridge. Media reported that on I-880, protestors had locked themselves to six concrete-filled barrels strewn across the northbound lanes of freeway while other protesters occupied the southbound lanes.

Pete Casillas has succeeded Mary Huss as Bay Area market president and publisher of the San Francisco Business Times. Casillas, 48, a 25-year media veteran, assumed the new role effective Feb. 13. Huss, who announced her impending retirement earlier this year, will continue as publisher emerita until May 1. The appointment was announced by Mike Olivieri, executive vice president, local markets for the Business Times’ parent company, American City Business Journals.

I was a 1,000-plus hour instructor pilot in the T–37 squadron at RND and an experienced platform instructor teaching aerodynamics, instrument procedures, and systems in both the T–37 and T–38 aircraft. On the side I had begun giving flight instruction as a CFI at SAT, flying Cessna 172s and Piper Cherokee 180s.
