Here are the Herald-Times boys and girls Athlete of the Week polls covering May 5-10. Congratulations to last week's winners. For the boys, South golfer Carson Gady got 58.7% of the vote (20,663) to top Panther baseball player Reid Walker (37.5%). For the girls, South tennis doubles duo of Mira Koduri and Clara Tweedie earned 53.8% of the vote (4,014) to top South runner Lexi Kollbaum (30.7%).

Outside of the legendary Betsy Cousins, no Bloomington North gymnast can match the success of Sofie Garcia. Being mentioned in the same breath as the 1992 vault, beam, floor and all-around champ is rare air but there's a reason for that. The senior earned medals in four of the five categories at state, adding a fourth on beam and floor to go with the two she earned in all-around and vault last year. She leaves with seven top-10 finishes for her career.

Edgewood sophomores Lincoln Getts and Benson Long were planning to wake up Sunday morning and show the world just how strong they are. Amazingly, after just two years competing, the pair earned two of the 200 invitations to the USA Powerlifting Student and University World championships in the Boston, Massachusetts suburb of Waltham. That in itself weighed as much as their top deadlift.

Eastern Greene is banking on Shawn Nikirk. The T-Birds have tapped the former Bedford North Lawrence All-State receiver and former Stars assistant coach for 10 years to take over its football program. It will be the first head coaching job for the 49-year-old father of three who handles mortgages for Fifth Third Bank in Bloomington. Nikirk is back on the sidelines after a four-year absence. He feels the time is right to come back.

A pair of former Bloomington North football standouts have landed after a whirlwind trip through college football's transfer portal. There's plenty to look forward to for redshirt freshman tight end Aidan Steinfeldt, who is heading to FCS power Richmond with four years of eligibility after his one-year stay at Marshall. For defensive lineman Race Stewart, there was no wiggle room. He had to get it just right with only one year of playing time left.
