BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – When you think of Aljami “Al” Durham. you think of effort. He attacked the basket with abandon. He put effort into his defense. If nothing else, he was going to get some floor burns along the way. That effort was often a necessity as the Indiana teams that Durham played for were below average by program standard. Durham played at Indiana from 2017-21, and try though he might, the Hoosiers could not lift themselves to NCAA Tournament status during his time in Bloomington.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – It would be a big mistake to over-generalize that when Curt Cignetti became head coach before the 2024 season, the players he inherited had to win their jobs back. Cignetti isn’t hard to figure out. He just wants results. If you bring the results, you get the rewards. That’s true for players he inherited, players he brought with him from James Madison, and players he brought in as transfers from elsewhere. You are what you produce. Still, it’s a stern test.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Nicole Cardaño-Hillary checked a lot of boxes regarding what Indiana women’s basketball coach Teri Moren likes to have from her guards. Cardaño-Hillary could see the floor well. Cardaño-Hillary could defend and was opportunistic. Cardaño-Hillary could shoot well enough to keep an opposing defense off-balance. Cardaño-Hillary did more than just complement the star players; she could go on a star turn herself.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Among many other things, the transfer era of college basketball has made roles more defined for players who come into a program from elsewhere. The notion of a player growing into a role or branching their game out as they evolve is largely disappearing from the college game. Why wait for a player to develop when you can shop in the transfer portal and quickly find what you need?

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Of all of the players in the top 16 Indiana football players of the 2020s list, Donaven McCulley might have had the weirdest career. He came to Indiana as a quarterback. He was thrust into the starting role when Michael Penix got hurt in 2021, before he was ready and with the Hoosiers trying to salvage a lost season. A position switch in 2022 to wide receiver progressed slowly, but by the last half of the 2023 season there might not have been a better target in the Big Ten.
