York County’s Jacob Barnitz joined the Continental Army in its fight for independence as a teen, a decision that would mean suffering every day for the rest of his long life. It was 1776, and he was fighting under George Washington, whose struggling forces were pushed from Manhattan by the British. Barnitz stayed behind with a garrison at Fort Washington on the island’s northern tip. In fighting that followed, he was shot in one leg but not yet disabled.

Mess Attendant 1st Class Charles Walter David Jr. rescued 93 Dorchester survivors from the icy North Atlantic. A new monument in York’s Veterans Memorial Park will honor David and the four chaplains of the Dorchester. The memorial project has raised $570,000 of its $1 million goal. Mess Attendant 1st Class Charles Walter David Jr. cleaned officer quarters as part of his daily duties aboard the Coast Guard cutter Comanche.

Fletcher Webster, colonel of the 12th Massachusetts Infantry, was traveling with his unit by rail through York County in July 1861.
