High prevalence of mental illness: In 2019-2020, 20.78% of adults in the US were experiencing a mental illness, which is equivalent to over 50 million Americans. In 2021, 22.8% of US adults experienced mental illness, and 5.5% experienced serious mental illness.

Several days prior to President Jimmy Carter’s visit to Burlington, the Muni Band was contacted by the President’s advance team inquiring whether we might play when he gave his speech in Crapo Park. They asked to attend a rehearsal of the band to determine if we would be “suitable” for the occasion.

We hope audience members will come out early to hear the Burlington Muni Jazz Band, led by Derrick Murphy, which will perform at 6:20 p.m., playing some great big band selections. And, at the usual starting time of 7:30 p.m. I’ll be conducting the full band.

Jeremy Henman will conduct the eighth summer concert of the Burlington Municipal Band. Jeremy, who plays trumpet in the band, has been a highly successful general music teacher in the West Burlington schools and this fall, he will be assuming the high school band position that was vacated by Ben Grochowsky's decision to go to graduate school. Jeremy's "theme" for this concert will be "great music" and he's chosen some challenging and audience-pleasing pieces that you won't want to miss.
