White inmates benefited the most from efforts to reduce Ontario jail populations during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a new study. While people of all racial backgrounds benefited from the “decarceration” efforts — spurred by increased health risks to jail populations — Indigenous, Black and non-Black racialized people remained incarcerated at higher rates and spent more days in custody than white people, according to the study, published in The Lancet Regional Health — Americas.

That “negligent” investigation and her now-quashed life sentence amounted to false imprisonment, Ali and her husband, Allan, argue in the claim, filed with the Superior Court of Justice in August. The claim names the City of Toronto, the Toronto Police Services Board, former homicide detective Frank Skubic and Toronto Fire captain Semahj Bujokas as defendants, alleging the officials failed to meet a duty of care to the parents after their daughter Cynara’s death in 2011.

Toronto police sergeant gets eight-month demotion for her role in violent ‘mistaken identity’ arrest of UofT student

Sgt. Rachel Saliba, one of two Toronto police officers who pleaded guilty to misconduct charges in the “mistaken identity” arrest of Hasani O’Gilvie, a Black university student, was penalized with an eight-month demotion on Monday. Saliba pleaded guilty earlier this year to an unlawful exercise of authority in making an unnecessary arrest that she initiated, even though O’Gilvie had identified himself verbally to her. The two other officers involved in the arrest have also been disciplined. Const.
