    Miami Coral Reef girls’ track & field athlete Samantha Ruiz is the Miami Herald’s High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll. The senior recently won GMAC track & field titles in the 1,600 meters (5:18.36) and 3,200 meters (11:32.57) events. She is a former GMAC champion in cross-country, too.

    The Miami Columbus boys’ volleyball team won the GMAC Tournament, and Miami Doral Reagan was the runner-up. This marks the third GMAC boys’ volleyball title for the Explorers (21-2). Columbus defeated Reagan 25-18, 25-21 in the finals. In the semifinals, the Explorers beat Miami High 25-22, 25-20 and in the quarterfinals, defeated Doral JC Bermudez 25-18, 25-19.

    In a battle of unbeatens, True North beach volleyball upset the state’s top ranked 3A team Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas 3-2 in Deerfield Beach. Each match -- except No.1 doubles -- went to a third set tie-breaker as the Titans improved to 9-0. Coached by Sissy Cantillo, True North also defeated Miami Doral Academy 5-0, Miami LaSalle 5-0, Southwest Ranches Archbishop McCarthy 5-0, Miami Florida Christian 5-0, Miami Beach 5-0, Miami Coral Reef 5-0, Miami Ferguson 5-0 and Miami Lourdes 4-1.
