Norwich Free Academy senior Kenzie Rathbun sure picked a good time to deliver the biggest hits of her career. Rathbun powered the Wildcats to a big early lead against Fitch with a three-run homer. After the Falcons staged an improbable game-tying rally in the top of the seventh, Rathbun capped her big day with a thrilling bases-loaded walk-off single. “I just wanted to help my team,” Rathbun said.

Just thought I’d empty out my reporter’s notebook while wishing all the moms out there a Happy Mother’s Day. Gold Key AwardThe Gold Key Award is the most prestigious sports award in Connecticut. It is given to honorees by the Connecticut Sports Media Alliance at its annual dinner in October. Besides the Gold Key, the Alliance also bestows awards to players, coaches, and administrators who have achieved excellence throughout the state’s sporting landscape.

Jessica Norris was hoping to see a yellow butterfly on Saturday during the annual Morgan Ross Memorial Scholarship softball game. It would be a sign that her late daughter was nearby. “We truly believe that Morgan is the yellow butterfly,” Norris said. Someone posted on Facebook later in the day that they, indeed, saw the yellow butterfly at the Killingly Little League Complex in Danielson.

Griswold’s Andrew Hardin has been voted The Bulletin Athlete of the Week for the week of April 21-26. The Wolverines senior righthander tossed a five-inning no-hitter while striking out 13 to lead Griswold over Putnam, 13-0, in ECC baseball action. Hardin also had two hits at the plate. This week saw plenty of standout performances in baseball, softball, and boys outdoor track and field across Eastern Connecticut. While there's no shortage of talent, we went and found the best of the best.

There were a number of highlights and top performances from our local teams this past week. Norwich Free Academy girls lacrosse duo Molly Page and Hayleigh Young set new school records during the Wildcats game against Waterford. Killingly softball rolled past Woodstock Academy at the annual Morgan Ross Memorial Scholarship Game. The Norwich Free Academy softball team swept a rare doubleheader and extended its winning streak to seven games.
