Introduction Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) refers to varying degrees of abnormal glucose metabolism occurring during pregnancy, excluding pre-existing diabetes mellitus (DM) prior to pregnancy (American Diabetes Association, 2019). It usually occurs during the second or third trimester and has been increasing in prevalence over the years (Mack and Tomich, 2017). GDM is a common complication of pregnancy, posing significant risks to both the mother and the child (Zhong et al, 2022).
