Editor’s summaryThe appetite-stimulating hormone ghrelin promotes hepatic lipid accumulation. Zhang et al. investigated the regulation of hepatic lipid homeostasis by Piezo1, a mechanosensitive ion channel that is activated when food ingestion stretches the stomach and that suppresses ghrelin production. Mice lacking Piezo1 in ghrelin-producing cells in the stomach developed hepatic steatosis, which was reversed by pharmacologically blocking the ghrelin receptor.

When a nuclear-replicating virus enters a host cell, the viral capsid docks onto the nuclear pore complex (NPC) to deliver the viral genome to the nucleus. For some viruses, such as human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1), the entire capsid translocates into the nucleus; for other viruses, like herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), only the genome is released into the nucleus.

Editor’s summaryActivated T cells must ramp up ribosomal biogenesis in nucleoli to support protein synthesis required for proliferation. Rosenlehner et al. investigated the interplay among T cell receptor (TCR) signaling, ribosomal biosynthesis, and mTORC1, a multiprotein complex implicated in cell growth and proliferation. mTORC1 was required for the rapid cell cycling of proliferating activated T cells.
