Read Your Heart Out is turning 20 years old today. School communities throughout the Madison Metropolitan School District will celebrate the 20th-anniversary milestone Monday by having families and community volunteers read to students in their classrooms. Michelle Belnavis, the founder of Read Your Heart Out, was a longtime educator in the MMSD and remembers the humble beginnings in Midvale Elementary School that have now been expanded to the entire district.

Los Angeles (CNN) — Nightmares have tormented Soo Wong for the past year, fueled by thehorror she witnessed when a gunman opened fire inside a California dance hall, killing her close friend and 10 other people as a Lunar New Year’s Eve party was in full swing. Wong found herself overwhelmed by grief and the lingering terror that left her jumping at loud noises and sleeping with the lights on. “At the beginning, I didn’t dare see a therapist,” Wong said.

Freedom Inc.’s Youth Justice Department will host Youth Got Talent, a youth-led talent show, on Sunday, Feb. 11, 1-4 p.m. at the Madison Concourse Hotel. The talent show is open to youth of color, ages 12-18. A $500 prize will be awarded to first place and additional prizes for 2nd-5th winners. Youth Justice organizers Shyra Adams, Mai Thao Yang, Milcah Rimmer, and Selena Yang share their objectives about what creating this space means for their communities.
