Individuals from the Highmore-Harrold, Miller and Smee school districts are among those that will graduate from South Dakota’s Teacher Apprenticeship Pathway (TAP) program this weekend (May 10, 2025) at Dakota State University or Northern State University. The new teachers combined their years of work experience as school paraprofessionals with an education opportunity, to put them on the path to becoming full-fledged teachers.

Starting Monday (May 12, 2025), the Hughes County Highway Department will be doing roadway base repairs to Range Road. This work will take place for the duration of the week and traffic is advised to enter Range Road from Kingsway Road. Hughes County thanks its citizens for patience and compliance while the repair and maintenance work is being done. Starting Monday (May 5, 2025), the Hughes County Highway Department will begin the process of replacing culverts along Range Road.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The father of a Wisconsin teenage girl who killed a teacher and fellow student in a school shooting has been charged with felonies in connection with the case. The shooting occurred at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison last December. The shooter’s father, Jeffrey Rupnow, 42, of Madison, was charged Wednesday (May 7, 2025), but the counts weren’t unsealed until he had been taken into custody Thursday.

The Burke School District is one of six in South Dakota that have been awarded grants to “modernize their Career and Technical Education programs.”The two South Dakota Workforce Education Grants and four South Dakota Perkins Reserve Grants awarded total over $600,000 ($601,550.45). Burke received a Workforce Education Grant worth $225,000.

U.S. District Court Judge Karen E. Schreier has sentenced an Allen, South Dakota, woman convicted of Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance. Misty Hornbeck, age 50, was sentenced on May 5, 2025, to 11 years and three months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100. Hornbeck was indicted by a federal grand jury in March 2024, and pleaded guilty on February 27, 2025.

In the past few months, the United States federal government has levied tariffs on a variety of products from multiple countries.
