SPICER — The scoreboard got a lot of work at the Green Lake Diamonds on Thursday. In the bottom of the third inning of a non-conference baseball matchup between New London-Spicer and Paynesville, the Wildcats sent three balls over the outfield fence for home runs. Two of those were back-to-back from Brayden Skindelien and Blake Schultz.

ST. CLOUD — The Willmar softball team got swept by the St. Cloud Crush on Thursday at St. Cloud Tech High School. St. Cloud beat the Cardinals 3-2 and 10-0 in the Central Lakes Conference doubleheader. In Game 1, St. Cloud’s Lola Jacobs out-dueled the Cardinals’ Grace Kalkbrenner. Jacobs struck out 10 with no walks, allowing six hits and two runs, one earned. Kalkbrenner struck out four, walked two and allowed four hits and three earned runs.

COLD SPRING — The girls took third and the boys fourth for the Willmar track and field team in the Ed Babcock Invitational on Tuesday evening at Rocori’s Blattner Stadium. Rocori’s girls placed first with 168 points, followed by Sartell’s 144 and Willmar’s 136. On the boys’ side, Sartell won at 142.5, which edged Sauk Rapids’ 135 and Rocori’s 116. The Cardinals’ boys came in at 94.5. Three girls won individual events for Willmar. Two relay teams also took first place.

Apr. 13—ZUMBROTA — The Willmar softball team opened the season with a pair of losses in the Zumbrota-Mazeppa tournament on Saturday. The Cardinals lost their opener to Moose Lake/Willow River 7-4. That was followed by a loss to the host Cougars, 13-1. AdvertisementAgainst the Rebels in Game 1, Norah Nesges was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Isley Ripperger finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base. Lily Tammen and Brynnlee Carroll both were 1-for-2.
