It’s a view that’s inspired many a poetic impulse, so it’s only appropriate Lim would also find a life path toward poetry. “The place is very important,” Lim said sitting in her Rincon Hill apartment.

If there is a central ingredient in Ann Holsberry’s art, it’s not paints or brushes, the silk tapestries or the innovative chemical systems she uses to craft her unique art. It’s nature. If nature is prominent in her art, it’s only because it’s prominent in Holsberry’s life. The Emeryville artist grew up on the Gulf Coast of Florida and the shape of water was always in her peripheral. Nature was her muse, and its artifacts were her canvas. “I was kind of a quiet young child,” Holsberry said.

A new study of some of California’s most commercially significant aquatic species paints a grim picture for the future of the state’s fishing industry under the growing threat of climate change. The study, compiled by a host of researchers including federal and state scientists as well as researchers from UC Santa Cruz and UC Davis, looked at 34 aquatic species in an attempt to gauge how each would fare under predicted climate change scenarios.

Inside Recology’s garbage collection hub for San Francisco, located in nearby Brisbane, is a somewhat secret museum devoted to the history of the city’s trash. As modern garbage trucks lumbered by dumping their loads, Kenny Stewart raised a warehouse door to reveal the motherlode of garbage truck memorabilia. The collection featured nine vintage vehicles illustrating the evolution of the city’s trash collection, from horse carts to the first compactor trucks.

The late Chronicle columnist Herb Caen called North Beach the heart of San Francisco. A neighborhood group is now hoping to elevate the neighborhood’s status to one of the nation’s vital organs through an application seeking to add it to the National Register of Historic Places. The Northeast San Francisco Conservancy filed the application with California’s Historical Resources Commission, which could forward the request to the National Park Service for final review.
